After dancing for her life, tapper Melinda Sullivan has left So You Think You Can Dance, leaving only 8 dancers in her wake. Robert Roldan and Billy Bell joined Melinda in the bottom three on the results show airing Thursday July 1, 2010, dancing for their lives in front of judges Mia Michaels, Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman. Ultimately it was Melinda who was chosen to leave, which was an inevitable outcome based on the judges’ bleak comments towards Melinda in the previous night’s live show.
Live Show Provided Both Brilliant and Lackluster Performances
The live show, which aired June 30, 2010, had the remaining dancers all competing in specific dance genres with partners from past seasons. Alex Wong, a ballet dancer from Vancouver, emerged on top of his game during an incredible hip hop number with partner Stephen “Twitch” Boss and choreographed by Tabitha & Napoleon D'uomo (“Nappy Tabs”), promoting his status as a front-runner this season. Ashley Galvan from Visalia, California was featured in a contemporary dance number for the third consecutive time, shining in a phenomenal number alongside Ade Obayomi, choreographed by Dee Caspary, a new choreographer to So You Think You Can Dance. Kent Boyd from Wapakoneta, Ohio failed in impressing the judges this week, performing a sexy jazz number with Allison Holker which proved to be anything but. Mia Michaels commented that they wanted to see another side of Kent instead of solely playing to the audience. The harshest criticism was reserved for tapper Melinda Sullivan, whom was saved from elimination last week. After performing a salsa dance number choreographed by Fabian Sanchez and partnered with Pasha Kovalev, the judges brazenly confessed that they believed they had made the wrong decision in keeping Melinda and sending Cristina Santana home the previous week.
The Judges Wasted No Time, Unanimously Sending Melinda Sullivan Home
The bottom three performed solos in their respective genres. The judges wasted no time with telling Billy Bell and Robert Roldan they were safe, stating the decision to send Melinda home was unanimous this week. Melinda Sullivan left gracefully, stating “I’m so grateful to share the gifts I’ve been given.” She leaves behind only two females in the running, while six males still remain.
As of Thursday’s results show on July 1, 2010 eight dancers remain: contemporary dancers Adechike Torbert, Ashley Galvan, Kent Boyd, Lauren Froderman, Robert Roldan, and Billy Bell; ballet dancer Alex Wong, and b-boy Jose Ruiz. These eight dancers will battle for seven places in next week’s live dance show, airing Wednesday July 7, 2010 at 9PM Eastern on FOX.
